Spinal Conditions — Diagnosis and Treatment
Causes, Symptoms, and Surgical Options
The spine is a complex and essential structure of the human body, made up of 33 vertebrae, intervertebral discs, ligaments, muscles, and nerves. Dr. Ricardo Martínez, a spine surgeon in Puerto Vallarta, diagnoses and treats the full spectrum of spinal conditions with an individualized, multidisciplinary approach.
Spinal disorders are a major health concern affecting millions of people worldwide. They can cause pain, weakness, numbness, and even deformity, but with the right diagnosis and proper treatment, most conditions can be resolved.
Types of Spinal Conditions
Dr. Martínez treats five major categories of spinal disorders:
1. Degenerative Conditions
These result from the natural wear and tear of the spine over time. Osteoarthritis, spondylosis, and degenerative disc disease are common examples. They are the most frequent spinal conditions in adults over 40.
Symptoms: Chronic back or neck pain, morning stiffness, difficulty moving or walking long distances.
Treatment: Medication, physical therapy, steroid injections, and in advanced cases, minimally invasive spine surgery.
2. Traumatic Conditions
Caused by direct injuries such as car accidents, falls, or impacts that produce vertebral fractures or dislocations. These require urgent evaluation by a spine specialist.
Symptoms: Severe pain, swelling, visible deformity, weakness or numbness in the extremities.
Treatment: Rest, pain management, orthopedic bracing, and when necessary, emergency spine surgery.
3. Infectious Conditions
Caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi that infect the spine. Discitis and vertebral osteomyelitis are the most common. They require accurate diagnosis and immediate treatment.
Symptoms: Intense localized pain, fever, chills, redness, and swelling in the affected area.
Treatment: Antibiotics, antivirals, or antifungals depending on the causative agent, and in some cases, surgical drainage.

4. Tumoral Conditions
Spinal tumors can be benign or malignant. Primary tumors originate in the spine itself, while metastatic tumors spread from other organs to the vertebral tissue. They require specialized oncological and surgical evaluation.
Symptoms: Progressive pain that does not improve with rest, weakness in the legs or arms, numbness, unexplained weight loss, and fatigue.
Treatment: Depending on the type and stage of the tumor, treatment may include spine surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of all three.
5. Osteoporosis and Fragility Vertebral Fractures
Osteoporosis reduces bone density, making the vertebrae more fragile and prone to collapsing even without significant trauma. It is especially common in postmenopausal women and older adults.
Symptoms: Lower back pain, fragility vertebral fractures, progressive loss of height, and rounding of the spine (kyphosis).
Treatment: Bone-strengthening medications, physical therapy, lifestyle changes, and minimally invasive procedures such as vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty.
Most Common Spinal Conditions
- Cervical and lumbar herniated disc: Protrusion or displacement of the intervertebral disc that compresses spinal nerves.
- Spinal stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal that compresses the spinal cord and nerves, causing pain and difficulty walking.
- Spondylolisthesis: Slippage of one vertebra over the one below it, producing chronic pain and instability.
- Degenerative scoliosis: Abnormal lateral curvature of the spine in adults, frequently associated with joint wear.
- Spondylosis (spinal osteoarthritis): Wear and tear of the spinal joints and discs with age.
- Traumatic vertebral fractures: Caused by accidents or direct impact to the spine.
